City of Galveston celebrates first annual GIS Day
Press Release
Monday, November 05, 2018

Galveston, TX – The City of Galveston will celebrate GIS Day on Wednesday, November 14.

The City of Galveston is joining hundreds of organizations around the world by hosting GIS Day, an international forum for users of geographic information systems technology to demonstrate its real-world applications.

“The City is proud to host its first annual GIS Day and have an opportunity to show how GIS has improved the services we provide to our residents and businesses,” said City Manager Brian Maxwell. “We are constantly expanding our use of GIS to better serve residents and businesses on the island.”

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, analyzing, storing and displaying data related to geography or mapping. At the City, we use GIS as tools to assist decision makers.”

“We use GIS for development service planning and zoning decisions,” said Hope Dean, Executive Director/Chief Information and Technology Officer for the City. “For capital improvement projects, GIS data identifies areas of infrastructure distress for planned utility and street mill and overlay.”

The City also uses GIS to track water, storm sewer and sanitary infrastructure. Web maps are available to the public to view code enforcement cases, permit locations and flood maps.

The City of Galveston’s GIS Day will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at City Hall in Council Chambers and Room 204.  This event is open to the public and we invite all to join. Sessions will run between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

A detailed schedule of demos and presentations can be found at https://gis.galvestontx.gov/gisday. Registration for this event is available through the website.
