City preparing for potential severe weather
News Release
Friday, December 07, 2018

The City of Galveston has been prepping this week for potential street flooding and severe weather beginning Friday afternoon and continuing through Saturday.

GALVESTON, TEXAS – City crews and management have been preparing this week for expected storms and severe weather Friday and Saturday.

The latest weather forecast predicts scattered showers beginning Friday afternoon. Some storms could be severe with heavy rainfall. In the southeast Texas region, rainfall amounts of 2 to 5 inches are expected over most of the area but isolated spots could see as much as 8 to 10 inches.

There is a Flash Flood Watch in effect for Galveston County beginning at noon Friday through Saturday morning.

One of the concerns for Galveston is that this rain event is expected to coincide with high tide and there will be strong southeasterly winds, which will likely contribute to water stacking. High tide today is expected about 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. When tides are high it slows or prevents the precipitation from draining off the island into the bay.

Barricades are staged for deployment should the city need to use them. The city’s traffic staff has placed barriers at the corners blocking off the downtown district in the event of high water. We’ve also placed barricades out along the south side of Broadway. Drainage crews were also running debris management routes to pick up anything that might blow or float into the drains.

The City has a pump ready for use in case of high water along Harborside Drive west of the 51st Street intersection.

Crews will also be on standby ready to work Friday night into Saturday in the event of street flooding and heavy precipitation.

The City of Galveston is monitoring the weather and we will provide updates as information becomes available.
